Thinking green for the North Downs Walk

13 Nov 2022 | News

A sponsored walk is a healthy and environmentally-friendly way of raising money for good causes and our North Downs Walk (save the date – 11th June 2023) enables walkers to raise money for their own charities as well as for Cancer Research UK. With growing concerns about single-use plastics, we made some changes when the walk returned after the pandemic lockdowns.

Previously, we provided cups of water or squash at the checkpoints. Now, we ask walkers to bring their own water bottles which we refill at checkpoints, avoiding some 500 single-use plastic cups. When walkers get their drinks and well-earned ploughman’s lunch at the Village Hall, we are now using compostable plates, cups and cutlery and, from 2023, compostable rubbish sacks. This means that all of our rubbish could go for composting once KCC have the facility. In the meantime, we know that it will biodegrade in landfill in 10-12 weeks without any plastic or, if incinerated, it will burn without producing toxic fumes.
